Anahata Yoga Health and Education Trust Update
As you can see, Anahata continues to grow and expand. For the past few years Anahata has been operating as the Anahata Yoga Health and Education Trust (AYHET), a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering a lifestyle that integrates the principles of Satyananda Yoga in all aspects of daily living.
Beyond the grounds of Anahata’s retreat space, AYHET is committed to building relationships in the local community and throughout New Zealand. In addition to improvements at Anahata Retreat, the Trust supports other activities around New Zealand:
- On-going donations to the Christchurch, Waikato, and Hamilton prisons of neti pots, books, and tapes through the Yoga Education in Prisons Trust (YEPT: www.yogainprisonstrust.org), an organization founded and run by members of the New Zealand Satyananda Yoga community.
- Supporting Siti, a neighbour’s 10 year-old daughter to experience ashram lifestyle and Sivananda Math in India
- Participating in Global Mala Yoga for Peace event for the UN International Peace day in September 2010 by hosting a havan (fire ceremony) and kirtan at Anahata, with funds raised going to YEPT.
Anahata also hosted an extremely successful fundraising event. It was a great afternoon in Nelson featuring the music of local artists, a raffle, and a havan – and we raised over $750 to support earthquake recovery in Christchurch and over $450 for Sivananda Math!
Other fundraisers organized by Anahata and Satyananda Yoga teachers at various locations around New Zealand have helped to raise the profile of Satyananda Yoga and strengthen ties in the communities.
The Trust has also gratefully received a substantial donation towards a new “people mover” (aka a 12-seater 4WD van) which will allow for more ecologically efficient transportation of guests and goods to and from Anahata. And we have been thrilled by the sponsorship of a former guest to support Moz, an 18-year-old high school graduate, in experiencing the ashram lifestyle and supporting his explorations of life – check out his story in the Living Yoga section!
Current AYHET Projects which need your support:
- Developing a Sponsorship Program with two aims:
- To support Anahata residents and sincere applicants wishing to pursue yogic studies – a program encouraging personal growth and transformation while gaining skills to share yoga with others. Completing the in-depth 2-year Diploma of Satyananda Yoga Training costs $7020 AUD ($9,600 NZD) plus travel costs.
- To help more people in financial need experience the benefits of yogic living at Anahata.

- Further $10,000 in funds still required towards the new "people mover"
Other Future Projects:
- Continuing development of Anahata Retreat’s infrastructure. As we continue to grow, there is a need to continue to improve and increase the capacity of our systems. In particular, future projects include a further upgrade to our solar system to reduce our dependence on the back-up generator which burns fossil fuels, a new ablutions block, more accommodations and a new workshop / garage / woodshed.
- Building walking paths to foster public access to this unique native forest we are so fortunate to enjoy.
- Creating new yoga products, such as yoga CDs, which support practice at home and personal development, particularly aimed at specific groups such as Yoga for High Blood Pressure, Yoga for Women’s Health, and more Yoga for Kidz products.
If you would like to support the ongoing work of the AYHET and to help us share the benefits of yoga, check out our website for options on tax-deductible donations and making bequeathments to Anahata in your will.
