Put your heart, mind, intellect and soul even to your smallest acts. This is the secret of success - Living Yoga by Nirakara
August 2013, Grace and I arrived (not to forget Nilly the cat) in Christchurch, the “Big Smoke” after seven years of living on the edge of Mt Cook and Fiordland National Parks. During this time we had both worked in amazing environments with amazing people. However the stress on our bodies and minds from living and working in such stimulating environments had taken its toll. It was time to seek a holistic and connected way to live. Our move to the city was inspired by a need to be closer to our families and to follow our heart's desire to have access to more yoga teachers, meet more spiritually minded people and reconnect with a healthier state of being.
That connection started off with Kirtan at the Vishuddhi Yoga Studio. We went to our very first evening of Kirtan the Satyananda Studio hosted by Pavitrananda. It was a memorable evening full of singing, chanting and chatting to other Yoga people over Cake and Chai. This practice seemed to fill a gap... it shone light into the dark places of our hearts and help us to express some of the seemingly inexpressible feelings that we had long forgotten about.
Satyananda Yoga seemed to answer a lot of our questions that we had been asking for a long time. The style of yoga and philosophy seemed to merge well with our daily lives. It wasn't an addition or an extra 'to do' or 'something to achieve'. Pavitra came back from her most recent trip to India with Mantra Diksha for me and my life started formally on a spiritual path. Little did I realise what we were getting ourselves in for.
It was roughly around this time, we both started to hear whispers, murmurings and stories of how beautiful Anahata was and this naturally captivated our interest and yearning to know more. I headed off to Anahata for a long weekend to test the waters. Firstly, the thing that blew me away was how I seemed to fit straight in, I felt like I was part of a Yoga Family. Secondly, how the practices felt like they resonated deeply. I returned home to Christchurch and felt the effects resonating for a week or two after and this was as a result of only a weekend....there was something in this.....read more.
